Is it possible to select the gender of your baby? What if we wanted to conceive a boy, can we influence the process by following a special diet, by changing sexual positions or by carefully timing intercourse? Or should we just rely on technology?
First let me make something clear, a woman has no control what so ever when it comes to determining the sex of her baby. The mechanics are simple, the eggs of a woman always contain the X chromosome, man's sperm is a mixed bunch of Y and X chromosomes. When the egg is fertilized by a Y chromosome sperm the baby will be a boy and when the egg is fertilized by a X chromosome sperm the baby will become a boy. Thats simple to understand, so if things don't go as planned ladies, it's simply one more item to put on " the blame on the husband" list".
Most theories about influencing a baby's gender are based on the idea that it's somehow possible to create the right circumstances for the Y (if you want a boy) or X chromosome sperm (if you want a girl) to reach the egg first.
What increases the chance to conceive a boy?
Statistics
The chances for a baby boy are always slightly higher than for a baby girl, looking at the statistics we see that out of a 100 babies born, there are 51 boys and 49 girls. This is because boys are the weaker sex they are more fragile and have a higher mortality rate than girls, the higher percentage of boys is nature's way of compensating and to ensure that sexes are evenly distributed.
Genetics
Genetics also play an important role, research showed that men coming from a family with more brothers than sisters are more likely to have sons themselves, and vice versa. So simply spoken one can say that the gender of your baby is determined by the family tree of your partner. Scientists also believe in a yet undiscovered gene making a man's sperm contain more Y or X chromosomes, increasing the odds for conceiving either a higher percentage of boys (more Y chromosome sperm) or girls (more X chromosome sperm).
Time the moment of intercourse
Time the moment of intercourse, a well known gender specialist Dr Shettles thinks that we can influence the chances of conceiving a boy by having sex 24 hours before ovulation and 12 hours max after ovulation. This way the sperm containing the Y chromosome (boys) can take full advantage of their speed, Y chromosome sperm (boys) is faster than the X chromosome sperm (girls). The X chromosome sperm has longer endurance. Theoratically spoken one could say that making the distance to the egg as short as possible gives an advantage to the sprinter Y chromosome sperm.
Dr Shettles also believes that it's best to ejaculate deep inside the vagina (close to the cervix and egg) as it gives the faster male sperm a shorter distance to cover and therefore a headstart.
Dietary Influences
Eat bananas for a baby boy, it sounds like a joke but it's not, bananas are rich in potassium and studies showed that a diet rich in potassium makes it more likely to conceive a boy. Potassium rich foods for conceiving a baby boy are are:
| BANANAS | ORANGES |
| APRICOTS | TOMATOES |
| AVOCADOS | CUCUMBER |
| STRAWBERRIES | CABBAGE |
| POTATOES | CAULIFLOWER |
| TURMERIC | MUSHROOMS |
| PARSLEY | EGGPLANT |
| BROCOLI | SQUASH |
| TUNA | BRUSSELS SPROUTS |
| HALIBUT | SPINACH |
A diet rich in calcium and magnesium may help you to conceive a baby girl, magnesium rich foods are: milk, beans, cereals, cheese and nuts.
The Chinese Conception Chart
Discovered more than 700 years ago in Beijing, the Chinese conception chart offers a 90% sucess rate at home gender selection. It can predict the gender of the baby by using the age of the mother and the month of conception. ( when using this method you must use the chinese lunar age for the mother and the lunar month of conception for the baby, using the western calendar will not give the right results.)
Supplements
Evening Primrose is said to help in conceiving boys, it improves the quality of the cervical mucus making it more accessible for the faster male sperm. Potassium supplements may also help you in conceiving a baby boy. Taking Guaifenesin tablets 5 days prior to ovulation can help too, it thins out the cervical mucus and in a way makes the race track faster for boys.
Technology
Technology offers you two options, the first is seperating the Y from the X sperm, this technique is called sorting the sperm. The sperm is selected by mass and size by using a device called a spermsorter which measures the mass of the sperm. (X sperm (girl) has more mass than Y sperm (boys) This method is not waterproof it has a success rate of about 84% for girls and an average 78% for boys.
The second option is to conduct an ivf treatment, eggs are harvested with a thin needle and then fertilized in a petri dish. The embryos are then checked for gender and implanted. The two methods can be combined to get an almost 100% success rate. These techniques are often used to avoid passing on genetic disorders like hemophilia which only affects boys.
Whether you want a baby boy or a baby girl, the only thing that really matters is giving birth to a healthy child. Have a healthy life style, eat a well balanced diet, avoid stress and do enjoy the process of making your baby.
