At 13 weeks pregnant the baby is beginning to look like a tiny baby person. There is still much developing occurring as you and your baby enter your second trimester. You are 1/3 the way through your pregnancy. This first trimester goes fast because at the beginning of it you didn’t even know that you were pregnant yet.

MOM

Though morning sickness has been distracting, you may still notice abdominal aches and discomfort that aren’t related to being nauseated or sick. These new discomforts are normal as your body changes and the baby grows. The ligaments will need to stretch to accommodate the growing baby. This may lead to round ligament pain. The sharp or stabbing pain is usually brief, but may cause alarm. With no other symptoms like cramping, bleeding, vomiting that is not related to morning sickness, there is no cause to be concerned. Round ligament pain usually occurs with a change in position, especially if it is a quick movement. Try to do some relaxing excercises like Yoga to ease the tensions in your body.

The risk of miscarriage is reduced significantly just by entering into your second trimester. For women who have miscarried in the past, it is an especially sweet milestone in the pregnancy. In the second trimester there is still the risk of an incompetent cervix, which can cause a miscarriage. This is a rare occurrence. Women at high risk or who’s cervix begins to dilate early can have a procedure done that stitches the cervix closed until it is safe for the baby to be delivered.

There may be a milky discharge (leucorrhea) from the vagina, it is normal and will probably continue through your pregnancy.

BABY

Your baby has significantly grown by 13 weeks pregnant and is around 2 ½ to 3 inches long and weighs a little over ½ an ounce. It is amazing how something so tiny can already have such a big impact on your body.

The eyes on your baby are fused shut and will be moving closer together on its still rather large (in proportion) head. The intestines are moving further into their body, and the tiny pancreas starts producing insulin to regulate your baby’s sugar levels later in life. The bones are solidifying and both the larynx and vocal cords are developing.

LIFE

You are on the brink of having your energy return, feeling healthy again, and having morning sickness end. Enjoy every minute of your second trimester and get finished what you can before you enter your third trimester and spend more time resting again. This week is a good time to makes some lists of what has to be done, what you want to get done, and what would be nice to have done if there is help or extra time available.

If your sex drive has been absent, it should be returning. Plan some special time alone with your partner.
