At 8 weeks pregnant the reality has set in and it no longer seems like a vague dream, you are pregnant and somehow your body is going to create a new human being. Miraculous.
MOM
Your uterus is about the size of a grapefruit. Though you are not showing, clothes don’t fit quite as comfortably. If you have had previous pregnancies, you will likely show sooner than you did with the first one.
The “grapefruit” is putting enough pressure on your bladder that you continue to urinate frequently. In no time you will get used to automatically scanning everywhere you go to locate the nearest restrooms. You will get a slight break during the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy during the second trimester.
Your nausea and morning sickness (that may have turned into “all day sickness”) is peaking. You may find that you have gone off certain foods that you used to like. Some women also have a taste llike metal in their mouth, which is probably caused by pregnancy hormones. You and the baby are strong and you will get through this. Watch any food triggers and try taking your prenatal vitamin with meals. Changing to one without iron can help. Some women wait to take their prenatal vitamins until their second trimester when morning sickness is gone or milder.
Many women notice that they have more vaginal discharge at this stage. This is quite normal, unless the discharge is itchy, uncomfortable or has an unpleasant smell. If your discharge is causing you concern speak to your doctor or midwife, as this may be a sign of a vaginal yeast infection or thrush. Thrush is a common problem during pregnancy, but can be easily treated.
There may be some vague stretching sensations in your abdomen. Mild discomforts may be experienced. Your breasts will continue to grow and be sensitive.
BABY
The baby is about ½ an inch long at 8 weeks pregnant.
Eyelids, the upper lip, and the nose tip are forming during week 8 of your pregnancy. The heart now has four distinct chambers and is pumping strongly. Its little tail will start to disappear. The arms and legs will lengthen and elbows will be noticed. Nerve cells are beginning to connect and lung branches are forming. Development is still fast and furious.
LIFE
You have probably seen a health care professional to confirm your pregnancy. Your usual OB/GYN might be perfect for you up until now, but it is time to do some research. Look into birthing options and choices in types of health care providers (different OB/GYN, midwife, lay midwife, etc.). First decide on the type of birth you want then look for the health care provider that can support that choice and has the experience. Look into birthing center, home birth, and hospital birth options. You don’t have to decide this week, so take your time doing your research.
Look into prenatal workouts or yoga classes for the support of other pregnant women and to keep fit and reduce stress.
If you haven’t gone shopping for a larger bra yet, you probably will need to now. Choose something comfortable with support. It is OK if it is a little roomy, you will be growing more before this is over. For some women, it is the first time they have cleavage, for other women larger breasts will contribute to back fatigue.
It may be hard to enjoy your pregnancy if you are experiencing morning sickness, but it will pass and energy will return during your second trimester.
