You made it through your first trimester and are ready to finish your last trimester at 28 weeks pregnant. As tiredness and discomfort return, excitement to meet your baby will increase as you enter into your final trimester.
MOM
Your weight gain should be slow and steady from here on out in your pregnancy. At your antenatal check, your doctor or midwife will palpate (feel) your abdomen, your uterus will now be about 3 inches above your navel and protruding forward. Your weight gain may be around 25 pounds. Proper weight gain reduces stress on your body as you provide for the increasing needs of you baby.
If you are Rh-negative, it will be time to receive an injection of Rhogam to protect you in case your blood and your baby’s blood mix. The one injection will provide protection through your delivery. After the baby is born, you will receive a second injection to make sure things go fine for future pregnancies.
Your appointments will increase and so will the discomforts of pregnancy, as you are about to enter into your last trimester of pregnancy.
Though some women suffering from asthma will find that their asthma may improve, others still deal with asthma attacks and with the increased size of the baby have more difficulties breathing which can lead to less oxygen to the baby. Though some are considered safe, take asthma medication only when absolutely necessary. Try these other ways to control asthma:
• Avoiding common allergy triggers
• Getting an appropriate amount of rest and sleep
• Have consistent prenatal care
• Exercise lightly under the supervision of a qualified physician
• Avoiding smoke or being around people that smoke
BABY
This last week of your second trimester your baby will be about 2.5 pounds with only 2-3 percent body fat. Your baby is nearly 16 inches long. At the antenatal check up, your doctor or midwife will check the size of your baby and can often feel certain body parts, such as their head, bottom and limbs.
The brain is maturing and no longer is smooth as it begins developing the grooves that adult human brains have. Many babies are born with little or no hair. For those babies that are born with hair, it begins growing now. This hair will fall out after birth and may grow in a different color. Eyes are blinking and during sleep may have REM (rapid eye movement)
LIFE
There will be talk of a baby shower or showers if you have a large circle of friends and family. For some, it makes sense to have one shower and two “hosts” planning. For others it works best to have the friend shower and family shower separate due to the number of people. Speak up for your preferences, including if you need a before baby shower or after baby shower. Writing thank you notes may be easier to get done before the baby is born, though!
Continue to plan special time with your partner, children, family, and friends.
