Homebirth what to expect Print E-mail
Labor and Birth

No matter what you expect at a homebirth, it will not happen! So be flexible and don’t get so caught up in the execution of the plan, you and your family miss out on enjoying the experience.

There is no way to predict how a hospital birth will go and the same is true of a homebirth. Each homebirth will be different than what is expected even when the following is true:

Expectations are open because it is the first homebirth
Previous pregnancy and birth
Previous homebirth
Attended a homebirth
Highly educated on homebirths
Medical background

Have a plan and a backup plan and let the experience happen and everyone will have a more memorable experience. Each and every birth from hospital births to homebirths are unique, your experience will be also.

There are some general expectations that will be fulfilled in almost every homebirth that is planned and prepared for:

You, your baby, and your family will be treated with respect.
The birthing plan will be honored as long as it is safe for mom and baby. Convenience of the staff is not considered.
It will be among the most memorable moments everyone who attends the birth will experience.
You will feel supported and capable.
The birth partner (dad, best friend, mother) will be included and feel valued and supported throughout the labor and birth. He or she will not be pushed aside while “professionals” take over the care of the mom.
You will be comfortable and receive the individual attention and care that you deserve.
Your surrounding will be familiar and the people who are part of the birth will be people you know. There won’t be strangers in and out of your room.
You will be free to move about as much or as little as you are comfortable with.

Allow flexibility in your birthing plan to account for the difference in what was expected at a homebirth and the reality of what really happens at your homebirth.
