diet pillsWhy are diet pills becoming so popular? In a time of fast foods and convenience stores people are looking for an easy quick fix for everything, including weight loss. Even most grocery stores have a section at the store entrance that has fresh salad, entrees, and sides so people can eat with the minimal amount of time used in food preparation. Those who want to control their weight or want to loose weight are looking for that magic pill that lets them eat whatever they want while sitting in front of the TV and still loose weight. There are no magic pills. Long-term healthy weight loss includes lifestyle changes that include changing the types and amounts of food that are eaten as well as increasing physical activity.

Diet pills are still very popular. They can be a benefit to jumpstarting weight loss and building confidence. Diet pills can also give a boost to a healthy weight loss program that limits food types, meal sizes, and fitness plans.

Long-term use of diet pills can affect health in a negative way. Obesity has its health affects and the risks must be weighed against each other. The health risks of diet pills:

· Heart valve thickening to the extent it affects function

· Irregular heart beat

· Sleep problems

· Increase in blood pressure

· Nervousness

· Anxiety

· Seizures

· Excessive weight loss

· Addiction

· Diarrhea

There are different types of diet pills available. These need a prescription from a doctor:

· Prescription diet pills-regulated by the Food and Drug Administration

· Prescription diet pills for morbidly obese-for use by those with a body mass index of 35+ or more, regulated by the Food and Drug Administration

These types of diet pills do not need a prescription:

· Over the counter diet pills-unregulated and aren’t “diet pill” but supplements

· Diet supplements-herbal diet aids and other supplements that are thought to aide in weight loss

Diet pills (prescribed and over the counter) and supplements work by creating a feeling of fullness, stimulating the body, and controlling the appetite mechanism in the brain.

Some diet aides like those that are mainly green tea are very affordable. The cost can be as much as $120 per month for other diet pill options. Insurance may or may not cover the costs of prescription diet pills.

Even when using over the counter weight loss products, research the product you are using and also consult with your primary health care physician.
